The hanging of an Iranian activist exposes a regime at the end of its rope
Iran’s judiciary announced on Wednesday that it had executed 26-year-old Mehdi Khanaki, a law graduate accused of active participation in the nationwide January 2026 uprising and membership in what the authorities described as a “terrorist group.” The regime’s Mizan news agency did not identify the organization by name. The National Council of Resistance of Iran, however, identified Khanaki as a member of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran, or PMOI/MEK, saying he had been arrested in February after months of surveillance and subjected to severe physical and psychological torture before being sentenced to death.
According to the judiciary, Khanaki had obtained firearms, ammunition, and communications equipment shortly before the uprising, and weapons seized from him had been used during the protests. Whether intended as a judicial announcement or a warning, the message was unmistakable: Tehran was signaling that those who organize resistance against the regime will face the gallows.
By any measure, Khanaki’s execution is far more than another grim statistic. It is a calculated message from a regime terrified not of foreign conflict or spontaneous unrest, but of the organized movement capable of channeling that anger into democratic change.
His execution follows a disturbing pattern. Since March 30, the regime has executed nine MEK members after sham trials that bore none of the hallmarks of due process. Today, at least 13 political prisoners, among them two women, 25 and 68, remain on death row, accused primarily of affiliation with the MEK. Their lives hang in the balance because the regime believes they represent something far more dangerous than individual dissidents: an organized democratic alternative.
This distinction matters. Authoritarian regimes can often survive spontaneous protests, weathering waves of public anger through repression and attrition. What they fear most is organization — an opposition capable of sustaining resistance, coordinating action, and offering a credible vision for what comes next.
That is precisely why Tehran has devoted more than four decades to conducting one of the world’s most extensive campaigns of censorship, disinformation, and demonization against the MEK. Billions have been spent on propaganda, cyber operations, and lobbying efforts abroad, all designed to convince Iranians and the international community that no viable democratic alternative exists.
If that strategy were succeeding, young people such as Khanaki would not be risking everything to join the movement.
Instead, the opposite is happening. Iran’s best and brightest continue to join the ranks of the MEK’s Resistance Units, fully aware that the price may be arrest, torture, or execution. They are drawn by opposition to an increasingly repressive regime and by the movement’s vision of a democratic republic compatible with freedom, equality, and popular sovereignty rather than clerical absolutism.
This generation has come of age amid economic collapse, endemic corruption, and political exclusion. They have watched every peaceful demand for change answered with bullets and prisons. For many, the question is no longer whether change is necessary, but how it can be achieved.
The January 2026 uprising accelerated that search. Across hundreds of cities, demonstrators openly challenged the foundations of clerical rule. The regime eventually crushed the protests through overwhelming force, killing thousands in the process. But its subsequent actions reveal that it views the uprising as evidence of an enduring organizational challenge. By hanging young activists such as Khanaki, Tehran hopes to convince an entire generation that resistance carries only one destination: the gallows.
History suggests otherwise. Just as the torture and executions of dissidents could not save the Shah’s regime, these barbaric acts will fail to forestall the collapse of the current one. Political executions expose a dictatorship’s vulnerabilities far more than its strength. Governments confident of their legitimacy rarely need to execute young law graduates for belonging to an opposition movement. They debate them. They allow competing visions to stand or fall on their merits.
THE REAL IRAN CRISIS: A REGIME AT WAR WITH ITS OWN CITIZENS
The Iranian regime does none of those things. The MEK’s greatest threat to the regime lies in its combination of political organization and an ideological challenge that directly dismantles Tehran’s monopoly over Islam. For a theocracy claiming divine authority, a Muslim movement that champions democracy, gender equality, and the separation of religion and state is not just destabilizing — it is existential.
Khanaki’s execution was calculated to frighten a generation into silence. Instead, it exposes the regime’s deepest insecurity. The gallows have become its final argument.
